Overview of Extractive Industries in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan has the largest recoverable crude oil reserves in the Caspian region, and extensive mineral resources (uranium, chromium, lead, zinc, manganese, copper, coal, iron, and gold). The hydrocarbon industry is estimated to account for roughly 30% of the Government's revenues and about half of export earnings. Proven oil reserves are estimated at 40 billion barrels (BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2007). In addition, proven natural gas reserves are estimated at 106 trillion cubic feet (Tcf). President Nazarbayev announced Kazakhstan’s endorsement of the EITI in 2005.

Status of EITI Implementation

Kazakhstan is an EITI candidate country, and has until 9 March 2010 to complete the validation process.

The first national EITI conference in Kazakhstan took place in Astana on February 29, 2008 gathering about 200 participants from the government, parliament, extracting companies, civil society organizations, international experts, and mass media. The goal of the conference was to discuss the implementation outcomes and development prospects of the EITI in the country, as well as to present and discuss the first Reconciliation Report for Kazakhstan.

Governance of EITI Implementation in Kazakhstan

A National Stakeholders’ Council including members of Government, Parliament, Companies and civil society has been formed to coordinate EITI.
