Overview of Extractive Industries in Madagascar

At present oil, gas and mining resources account for less than 4% of GDP.  However, all that is set to change.  The minerals sector is seeing a heavy inward flow of capital investment for ilmenite, nickel/cobalt, chromite, chrome iron ore, uranium.  Also a large number of oil exploration blocks have been offered - both onshore and offshore - and some exploration activity is under way.

Transparency is one of the major pillars of the good governance reforms for the Government of Madagascar. Though the Madagascar Action Plan (MAP), the Government has committed to transparency in the mining sector as an important element to achieve integrated and sustainable development.

Status of EITI Implementation

Madgascar was accepted as an EITI candidate country on 22 February 2008.

Madgascar has until 9 March 2010 to undertake validation.

A multi-stakeholder workshop of over 50 people was held on 20 December
2007 to consolidate and agree the individual workplans of Government, companies and civil society, that had been agreed in various recorded meeting over the previous 3 months.  The completed, costed and targeted workplan was agreed at that workshop, and then published and disseminated prior to the end of 2007.
