Overview of the Extractive Industries in Mali

The mining industry of Mali has recently attracted renewed interest with gold its leading export. Other natural resources include uranium and salt.

Status of EITI Implementation

Mali is currently a Candidate Country. It now has until 9 March 2010 to undertake Validation.

In August August 2007, the EITI Steering Committee and Permanent Secretariat were established. A workplan has been published.

Concrete steps are now being taken towards its first report.

Governance of the EITI implementation in Mali

The Malian Government established through a Ministry Decree an ambitious governance structure for EITI implementation. A Supervision Committee, a Steering Committee and a Permanent Secretariat are in place. The Supervision Committee defines the main political lines and strategies of action. The Steering Committee is in charge of the execution of the decisions made. Both Committees count on the participation of stakeholders from government, companies and civil society. They are supported by a Permanent Secretariat. Mr. Sidi Mohamed Zouboye is the Permanent Secretary and Coordinator and serves as its focal point.
